Understanding Personal Injury Chiropractic Care: What You Need to Know

If you’ve been injured in an accident, chiropractic care can be an essential part of your recovery process. We specialize in family chiropractic care and helping those with spinal injuries following various car accidents and sports injuries. Here’s what you should know to make the most of your chiropractic care:

1. Tailored Care Plans: Chiropractors create personalized care plans based on your specific injuries and symptoms. This might include adjustments to improve spinal alignment, as well as exercises and stretches to enhance mobility and strength.

2. Holistic Approach: Chiropractic care focuses on the root cause of pain, not just masking symptoms. By addressing spinal misalignments and muscle imbalances, chiropractors aim to restore your body’s natural function and promote overall wellness.

3. Collaboration with Other Healthcare Providers: Chiropractors often work in conjunction with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care and optimal recovery.

4. Importance of Follow-Up: Consistent attendance at scheduled appointments is crucial for effective recovery. Your chiropractor will monitor your progress and adjust your care plan as needed.

By staying informed and engaged with your chiropractic care, you can support a smoother, more effective recovery from your personal injury.

After the first several days following a car accident, give us a call if you’re struggling with/experiencing any of the following:

  • Neck, back, or spinal pain

  • Headaches

  • Feeling "slowed down"

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Dizziness

  • Fogginess

  • Fatigue

  • Memory/cognitive dysfunction

  • Balance dysfunction

Based on our experience, this is often (at least partially) caused by any or all of the following unresolved issues in the:

Neck "you can't have a head injury without a neck injury" (& most commonly missed area post-concussion)

  • Soft tissue damage (ligaments, etc.) & spinal misalignments can result from head injury

  • Brain and body communicate via the spinal cord → brain and body communicate via the spinal cord and a misalignment can cause a brain/body mismatch

  • Blood flow to/from brain is decreased → rotation of the first cervical vertebra/C1 in upper neck can lead to direct compression of the internal jugular vein, decreasing drainage from brain (leading to a feeling of a constant “pressure” within the skull)

  • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow disrupted --> brain stiffens [continued on next page]

Eyes → potential issues listed below

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Decreased reaction time, balance

  • Dizziness/tracking problems

  • Abnormal pupil sizes

Gut/GI → high inflammation levels and/or low Vitamin D3 levels in the body can slow healing significantly

  • “Leaky gut" occurs within 2-3 hours after concussion, which means do not take any NSAID's --> this increases the risk of intracranial bleeding (even though ER will usually give you aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.

The Chiropractor’s role in concussion/head & neck injury post-car accident:

To simplify (without over-simplifying), the Chiropractor’s job is to assess the function of the spine and the nervous system control, which controls everything in the body. When the head goes through significant trauma (sports injury, car accident, etc.), the neck - particularly the upper neck - absorbs much of that force

When this force exceeds a certain threshold, this excess force can cause misalignments and/or abnormal motion of the vertebra (especially in the upper neck or upper cervical spine) which can decrease the brain’s ability to communicate with the body through the spinal cord (a “wiring” problem), as well as mechanically disrupt blood flow and nourishment to/from the brain with blood flow & CSF (a “plumbing” problem).

Put simply, you can’t have a head injury without also having a neck injury. The Chiropractor’s job is to detect and correct any nervous system interference in the spine and upper neck and address it through the adjustment.

When there are post-concussion syndrome symptoms (anything lasting more than 30 days from the injury), the neck MUST be checked (and adjusted, if necessary).

It is always advisable to get checked by a Chiropractor post-concussion, and especially with any of the following symptoms remaining past 30+ days (as this is considered to be “post-concussion syndrome” which can have effects for years/decades).
